Joel Embiid Commits Long-Term to Philadelphia with $193 Million Extension
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has inked a three-year max contract extension valued at $193 million, ensuring his presence in the city through the 2028-29 season. This extension is a significant move by the 76ers, as it cements Embiid's role as the franchise cornerstone for years to come.
The deal, which includes a player option for the final year, is structured to benefit both the team and Embiid strategically. By the end of this contract, Embiid will be 35 years old. Notably, the star center turned down a player option worth $59 million for the 2026-27 season, opting instead to re-negotiate under terms that will see his salary rise to an estimated $59.3 million for that same season. His salary will subsequently increase to approximately $64.3 million in the 2027-28 season, with the player option for the 2028-29 season valued at about $69.1 million.
Should Embiid exercise this option, his total career earnings will surpass the impressive $500 million mark. In the immediate future, Embiid's earnings over the next five years are projected at $299.5 million.
Commitment to Philadelphia
Embiid's commitment to Philadelphia is unwavering. "Philadelphia is home," he stated emphatically. "I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything you've given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we're just getting started!"
Embiid’s enduring loyalty to the city is mirrored by the 76ers' leadership. "Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game," said Philadelphia 76ers Managing Partner Josh Harris. "We're ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come."
Harris continued to extol Embiid's virtues, both on and off the court: "Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely – if ever – seen. He is integral to this franchise's quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home."
Strategic Moves and Recent Additions
Alongside Embiid’s extension, the Philadelphia 76ers have made several key moves this offseason to bolster their roster. The team recently signed Paul George to a four-year max deal and secured Tyrese Maxey for a five-year max agreement. In total, these commitments mean the 76ers have dedicated approximately $715 million in future salaries to Embiid, George, and Maxey.
The team has also added depth by bringing in Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, Reggie Jackson, and Guerschon Yabusele. Additionally, the 76ers re-signed Kelly Oubre Jr. and Kyle Lowry, while K.J. Martin was brought back on a contract specifically designed to serve as a trade asset near the deadline.
Since the 2017-18 season, the 76ers have been one of the more successful teams in the league, trailing only the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and Denver Nuggets in terms of regular-season wins. However, postseason success has been elusive, as the team has not advanced past the second round of the playoffs in recent years.
On-Court Performance
Last season, Joel Embiid delivered an MVP-caliber performance, averaging 34.7 points, 5.6 assists, 11.0 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game. His usage rate was an astronomical 38.7%, underscoring his critical importance to the team’s offensive and defensive schemes.
Throughout his career, Embiid has participated in seven All-Star Games, been selected for five All-NBA teams, and earned three All-Defensive Team honors. His skill set and performance on both ends of the court have solidified his reputation as one of the premier players in the league.
Embiid's international prowess was also on display recently, as he won a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics in Paris. This added another accolade to an already storied career and further showcased his talent on the global stage.
Reflecting on his journey, Embiid remarked, "I started a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career. I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia."
In closing, Embiid extended heartfelt thanks to the 76ers' top brass and the community, "I want to thank Josh, David [Blitzer], and the entire organization. Philadelphia is home and it's time to bring this community an NBA championship."
As the new season approaches, the anticipation and hope surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers are palpable. With Joel Embiid’s commitment, complemented by strategic acquisitions and a highly talented roster, the 76ers are positioning themselves as formidable contenders in their pursuit of an NBA title.
