Porter’s legal representation sought Judge Hall’s approval for him to join Promitheas BC in the Greek Basketball League and the Basketball Champions League in Europe.
The proposed plan extended beyond simply playing basketball; it included relocating to Patras, Greece, with his wife and their expected child. Porter's attorneys argued that continuing his basketball career in Greece would facilitate his treatment plan for gambling addiction. They highlighted that in-person counseling services were available in Greece, which could support Porter's recovery.
The request also included the return of Porter's U.S. passport to allow for international travel. Notably, both the United States attorney's office and the United States pretrial services officer did not oppose Porter's request.
Judge Unconvinced
Despite the arguments presented, Judge Hall remained unconvinced about granting Porter permission to travel overseas. The judge questioned whether allowing Porter to pursue his career abroad while under legal scrutiny would be appropriate.
Porter's attorneys had assured Judge Hall that the travel would not interfere with Porter's legal obligations. They mentioned that Promitheas BC officials were fully aware of the possibility that Porter might need to return to the United States "at a moment’s notice" for court proceedings.
