Atlanta Falcons Make Strategic Defensive Upgrades
In a strategic bid to bolster their defensive lineup, the Atlanta Falcons have announced the acquisition of former All-Pro safety Justin Simmons. This significant move, revealed on Sunday, follows closely behind the team’s trade for elite pass rusher Matt Judon, reflecting the Falcons’ clear intent to fortify their defense ahead of the upcoming NFL season.
Simmons, a stalwart in the Denver Broncos' defense, brings with him a wealth of experience and accolades. Drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Boston College, Simmons has spent his entire eight-year professional career with the Broncos. During his tenure, he was named a Second Team All-Pro four times and earned two Pro Bowl selections, underlining his status as one of the premier safeties in the league.
The journey with the Broncos came to an abrupt end for Simmons in March when he was waived by Denver, a move that saved the team $14.5 million. Despite this, Simmons remained a highly sought-after free agent. Both the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints showed keen interest in securing his services, with Simmons ultimately deciding to continue his career in Atlanta. At 30 years old, Simmons still showcases impressive stats, illustrating he has plenty left in the tank.
Last season, Simmons proved his prowess as he emerged as one of the NFL's co-leaders in interceptions, securing six picks. However, his performance was marred by a quad injury that restricted him to just 12 games, leading to his placement on injured reserve in mid-September. Despite these setbacks, Simmons bounced back in the 2023 season, appearing in 15 games and recording 70 tackles, eight pass breakups, a sack, and three interceptions.
The decision to bring Simmons on board was influenced by the Falcons' current struggles with injuries at the safety position. Second-year safety DeMarcco Hellams was carted off the field during the team’s first preseason game and was later seen with a cast on his lower leg, necessitating a reliable and experienced replacement.
Pairing Simmons with fellow All-Pro Jessie Bates III is expected to create one of the league's most formidable safety tandems.
