Mekhi Becton Eyes Versatility and Opportunity with Eagles
Mekhi Becton’s journey with the Philadelphia Eagles began in May when he signed with the team, bringing a new chapter to his professional career which has been marred by injuries and inconsistent play during his tenure with the New York Jets. This fresh start with the Eagles presents Becton with both challenges and opportunities as he aims to solidify his place on the roster.
Becton was initially expected to serve as a backup for Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson at tackle. However, the Eagles’ coaching staff had a more specific role in mind for him. Becton was slotted to play at guard, an adjustment he embraced during the team’s mandatory minicamp.
Despite early setbacks during his time with the Jets, including health issues, Becton has shown determination and adaptability. With Landon Dickerson absent for personal reasons and subsequently sidelined by a lacerated toe, Becton filled the gap at left guard during the minicamp, demonstrating his capacity to adjust to the interior line position. The transition hasn’t been without its difficulties, but Becton remains optimistic about his ability to adapt.
“It’s an adjustment, but it’s not a hard adjustment. I can do it,” Becton stated confidently. He acknowledges the differences between playing guard and tackle, particularly in terms of speed and required reactions. “Guard, it happens way faster. You don’t have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don’t have time to set up what you gotta set up. It’s real faster. It’s right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away.”
Becton’s impressive arm length, especially compared to typical defensive tackles, is seen as a distinct advantage. “I feel like I don’t really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that.” This physical attribute could prove crucial as he competes for the starting right guard spot against Tyler Steen in training camp.
Training camp and preseason games will be the true tests of Becton’s ability to adjust and perform under pressure. For now, he understands his role and is focused on being prepared when called upon. “I know I’m not, like that wasn’t the thing when they signed me here. I don’t have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I’m always gonna be ready.”
Becton’s versatility and ability to learn from his teammates are also notable. “I just learn from everybody all day every day. It’s a fun thing to do.” This open-minded approach is vital as he navigates the Eagles’ dynamic roster and seeks to carve out his place within the team.
The coming weeks will play a pivotal role in determining Becton’s role with the Eagles. Whether it’s as a starter or a reliable backup, he remains committed to being ready for whatever the team needs. “If I can start, I’ll start. If I don’t, I’ll be ready,” Becton asserts, reflecting his flexible and team-first mentality.
As Becton continues to adapt and compete, the Eagles will closely monitor his performance, looking to see if he can translate his physical gifts and newfound knowledge into consistent, impactful play on the field. The transition from tackle to guard requires both mental and physical adjustments, but Becton’s positive outlook and readiness to embrace challenges bode well for his future with the team.
In a sport where versatility and reliability are gold standards, Becton’s ability to adapt could be his ticket to a lasting role with the Eagles. The preseason will soon reveal whether this calculated gamble by the Eagles will pay off, as Becton strives to fully realize his potential and secure his spot on the team.
