In a landmark decision for the future of professional sports in Charlotte, the Carolina Panthers will remain in the city for at least the next two decades. This development comes after the Charlotte City Council approved a significant $800 million renovation plan for the Bank of America Stadium in a vote held Monday night.
City Council Approves $800 Million Renovation Plan
The plan sees the city committing to pay $650 million of the renovation costs, with Panthers' owner David Tepper providing the remaining $150 million upfront. Tepper, who has already pumped $117 million into prior stadium upgrades, has further agreed to cover an estimated $421 million in potential overages for capital improvements, if needed. The city's investment will be sourced from existing hospitality and tourism tax revenues.
The council's decision was not without controversy, passing by a 7-3 margin, demonstrating a mix of strong support and substantial skepticism among council members. Despite the Panthers' subpar performance since Tepper's acquisition of the team in 2018—accumulating a 31-68 record and cycling through six head coaches—council members emphasized the value of the Panthers to Charlotte's economy and community spirit.
Panthers' Struggles and the Economic Argument
Last season, the Panthers finished with an NFL-worst 2-15 record. Yet, the council's approval of this substantial investment underscores their determination to keep the team in Charlotte through 2045. Former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart added a nostalgic touch, urging the community to "embrace this opportunity to let the Queen City shine brighter even more so than it did in 2015."
