Tyler Guyton: The Dallas Cowboys' Standout Rookie Tackle
Tyler Guyton, a first-round rookie left tackle, has been making waves for the Dallas Cowboys since being selected 29th overall. With intelligence and confidence both on and off the field, Guyton's early days in the Cowboys' training camp have been nothing short of impressive.
Adapting Quickly to the Cowboys' System
Guyton's ability to quickly grasp and adapt to the Cowboys' system has set him apart from the rookie crowd. His rapid adjustment hasn’t gone unnoticed. "His intelligence and confidence for sure. It's showing on the field, too. The guy has picked up everything we have thrown at him... He comes back with the same mindset and does win it that time," quarterback Dak Prescott remarked.
During a recent team jeopardy night, Guyton's brilliance shone brightly. "The dude jumped up there and spelled it as fast without any hesitation as I have ever seen. Still mind blown to be honest with you," Prescott shared, highlighting the rookie's quick thinking and sharp intellect.
A Promising Start
Guyton, who began his football journey at the University of Oklahoma, started 13 of his 14 collegiate games at right tackle. Transitioning to the left side during the Cowboys' training camp, he managed to stonewall defensive star Micah Parsons in a padded practice session. "I thought he had some nice reps against Micah," head coach Mike McCarthy commended.
Facing someone of Parsons' caliber is no small feat for any player, let alone a rookie. "Of course it did. We're both getting each other better... Going up against him, even losing, helps me out," Parsons acknowledged.
Guidance from a Veteran
Guyton's development has been significantly aided by left guard Tyler Smith, who has taken on a mentorship role. "He's helped me out a lot. He's like a big brother to me," Guyton admitted. Smith, who also hails from Texas, has lauded Guyton's physical attributes and potential. "It's not very often that you find a human being who measures how he does, 6-7, 330 and has light feet and can just move and just bully dudes," Smith said. "The sky truly is the limit for him and his development."
Overcoming Challenges
Guyton's journey hasn’t been smooth sailing. He recently faced an illness that sidelined him for three practices in a row. However, he participated in a limited capacity in his first practice back. "I'm feeling better, for sure. I'm just under the weather, working my way back now," he said.
Despite this setback, Guyton hasn’t lost his sense of humor. During a rookie karaoke session, he performed Rick James' "Mary Jane." "It's a song that everybody knows is groovy and that would work," he joked.
Looking Forward
The Cowboys have high expectations for Guyton, recognizing his potential impact on their offensive line. With the upcoming joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams, Guyton will have another opportunity to showcase his skills and resilience. The departure of Tyron Smith has left big shoes to fill, but the team believes in Guyton’s unique potential. "He has to be Tyler Guyton. Doesn't really matter who played here before him... At the end of the day, you just need to be yourself and the best version of yourself," Prescott emphasized.
This promising rookie's journey is certainly one to watch. With intelligence, talent, and the guidance of seasoned veterans, Tyler Guyton is poised to make a lasting impact on the Dallas Cowboys and potentially become a cornerstone of their offensive line for years to come.
